I've been working part-time at Choices Video in my home town since September 2001, and I have to say that, most of the time, I really do enjoy my job. The people are friendly, it's quite flexible, but the pitfalls are a real pain sometimes.

WHERE I WORK
--------------------------
I work in the smaller Ipswich branch of Choices (there are two). We're situated in a row of shops on the estate where I live. We currently have eight part-time staff including me. The shop is relatively small considering that several of the ...

Advantages: 7 free videos a week, 20% in store discount, chance to make some great friends, chances for promotion Disadvantages: the pay, long hours
...that working part-time in a video store is a rubbish and unchallenging job. One that any idiot could do since after all, all you have to do is stack videos, right? WRONG! For quite a few months now, I've been working as a CSR (customer service representitive) for Blockbuster Video, and let me tell you, there is a hell of a lot more to it than just that! The hours are long and the job actually quite demanding. Apart from putting out videos, you also ... ...customer service, replenish stock, make sure all is in order at the end of the night... It does actually have its good points though. Like for instance the people. Because of peoples general oppinions, and the fact that the pay is not fantastic, the majority of those working there are students, like myself. We often all go out together for a drink and a laugh, this is also how I met my boyfriend! You also get some good staff discounts!!! 7 free videos ...

Advantages: £5 per work published, more money earnt and a good idea Disadvantages: Takes time to add work, and I'm a bit fed up of cutting and pasting
...Movies. Pretty self explanatory really they categories cover basically what would go into them, books films, holiday and universities.
The range of content is slightly limited by being open to students, but I find it more restrictive than this. I do not have any problems writing opinions on the entertainments categories, but I have had work turned down by smart students because it is not relevant. Much of the stuff is tried to keep up to date, so you can only write about the top ten current films, not some old video I managed to dig out of the videostore. I just found this a bit limited, there is nothing wrong with this, but if you are planning to transfer your life works onto here, then it may not all go. There is also a point that for one product that is very popular then they may not add your opinion as well. They are unwilling...

Advantages: Bonus scheme, working for a more 'environmentally friendly' supermarket. Disadvantages: Can be repetitive.
...first started at Waitrose I was welcomed by all the people I came into contact with. The training before you begin work is a little tedious, filling in various booklets and watching all the videos about the store. I was a little disappointed with my initial training though as I never got the chance to practice on the training till, I was just thrown in head first which was a little daunting, this being my first job. I was unfortunately even more disappointed when I was trained on customer services. The company went to the bother of training me and yet I do not work on the desk very regularly anymore which means I have forgotten what I learnt in the first place as I never got a proper chance to get to grips with it!
As I said before, all the staff are very friendly and if you are looking to work full time at Waitrose then I think...

Advantages: Excellent opportunity to learn many different areas of IT, only one year full-time, very good lecturers. Disadvantages: Price
...into account the other modules we had done thus far. This module certainly required concentration - the coursework being to design and develop a system similar to that used in your local video rental shop, that would store customer information, video and DVD information etc. Yes, stressful but quite enjoyable.
NETWORK PROGRAMMING IN JAVA:
I opted for this module. There was a choice between Digital Imaging, Visual Basic or this.
As the title suggests you study Java, the classes, sub classes, applets and programs etc.

Then you have your individual project to work on from a week after the exams in May until the end of September. That's why I have had no time recently to write any ops! :)
What else is there to say?
Perhaps the most important thing is the price.

For the past year I've had a dilemma. It's all revolved around the iPod. Basically my mobile phone doubles as an MP3 player and a video player as well as the standard mobile phone functions.
