Hubby and myself decided to go to Camber Sands (a southeast coastal resort), for some fresh air and a bit of exercise. The weather forecast was quite encouraging, so we donned summer clothes, some factor 8, and set off.

Now Camber, for those who have never had the pleasure, has a massive (primarily sand) beach which appears to stretch a good few miles wide. The sea, at low tide, also appears to be a good few miles out, so the opportunities to walk freely without falling over other day-trippers are good.

Anyway, with the open expanse of beach come large gusts of wind, and as it turned out rather bracing large gusts at that. By the time we'd walked out to dip our toes in the sea we were so bloody cold the appeal was anything but there. Fortunately, the saving grace of Camber is sand dunes. All along the back of the beach are sand dunes, so we decided we'd go and find a dune to hide behind and shelter from the wind.

We found ourselves a nice spot nestled amongst the dunes, and the sun was quite warm out of the wind, so we laid back and... fell asleep. We woke some 2 hours later! Bad move given that I'm very pale skinned, and that 2-hour snooze on top of the hour or so walking around on the beach meant that my factor 8 was past working. We both looked a touch pink, and didn’t think much of it really but decided to take a slow journey home anyway before rush hour traffic hit the road.

Hmmm, the road to Lydd (our quickest route home) was closed due to a bad car crash, so we ended up taking an hour long diversion just to get us back on track for home. By this time I was looking rather more red than pink, and still facing another hour in the car. My skin was feeling tight, less than comfortable - colour wise I was close to assuming a new identity as a tomato.

By the time we reached home my legs had almost seized up, and I felt like most of my body was on fire. I kind of hobbled up the stairs and aimed for the bathroom cabinet in hope of some solace, and I did indeed find it. Nivea Sun Sensitive After Sun Lotion, claiming to cool and soothe. During the evening I smothered hubby and myself a number of times, and the relief it brought was enormously comforting.

So, about this Nivea Sun Sensitive After Sun Lotion stuff? Well, mine is a 200ml bottle. The appearance of said bottle is a little plain, but I do often feel costs are kept down by keeping fancy packaging away from high street names, so not a major issue. The bottle is white, sporting the Nivea logo, and some deep blue writing. The screw cap is pale blue.

The lotion itself is a very pale yellow, and the consistency I'd say somewhere between double cream and salad cream - nicely fluid, but not runny to an extreme. The smell is quite fruity, best described as a light citrus aroma to my mind, which is a pleasant change to the often floral or generally ‘cosmetic’ smells of similar products.

The feel of this product on your skin is wonderful. It's very cooling, and not at all greasy. I found it very easy to rub in, well, I wouldn't even say rub really, it seems to absorb itself in pretty much as soon as you smooth it on. Application is aided by a nozzle like opening at the bottleneck and the bottle itself is pliable enough to squeeze but without being flimsy. Therefore you can direct and control the flow of the lotion without fear of great big blobs shooting out in all directions and adorning places that it isn't intended for.

I really am struggling to find any faults with this product. This lotion proved a wonderful aid to help my misery. It cooled, soothed, moisturised, and has probably saved me several layers of skin. The only place I have peeled in on my chest, where I didn't bother applying the lotion.

I don't intend to ever have such an urgent need for this lotion again though, as even having a good after sun by no means justifies allowing your skin to burn. But I won't hesitate in using it again for the general moisturising and cooling effect it offers. The instructions for use are basically as often as is required - applying when the skin feels dry, and as liberally as you wish.

Nivea Sun Sensitive After Sun Lotion is available at many supermarkets and chemists and is currently retailing at an average price of £4.99 for the 200ml size and £7.99 for the 400ml. Quite cheap compared to some other brands, and certainly worth every penny in my opinion.

Just in case you have any doubts, yes, it's recommended.
